A beautifully mellow evening of musically epic proportions
Today I spent most of the day by myself... kinda by choice
And I worked today... also kinda by choice
But I think my mind and body were ready for a little "me" time
In the past few weeks, I was so caught up in doing things that I forgot I just needed a day removed from the world a little... and funny, I got just that.
It all started with a non-existent morning where I woke up (at 11:30) to grey skies that reminded me of a typical Sunday morning (except that it was Saturday). I tried to work from home but gave up and went to the office. Three hours later, I was having a conversation with Ben who remembered how I said I went to the Jimmy Eat World concert. He asked what other concerts I've been to... leading to talk about screaming teenage girls and teeny-bopper concerts... leading to how he went to Dashboard Confessional and Death Cab By Cutie where that was also the case. He also mentions Iron and Wine, who I have heard of, thanks to Salah's annual best-of-compilation Brave Girl Replies. More talk of how potentially going to go see a show at the Double Door or Metro... that would be good.
So I go home, cook a big meal, and then thought it'd be nice to go to Michigan Avenue to check out the holiday crowd and take some photos. Fortunately, it was not too cold and wandering around by myself among the crowds, the traffic... I really felt like I was in my own world... kinda nice. I take my photos, take no notice of people looking, and wander aimlessly. Strange because it felt so peaceful.
So it's not a Saturday night if I didn't stop off at Virgin Megastore... so I did. I think I probably spent over an hour there just happily listening to music. The new Rufus is more expressively gay than ever but the music's still good... I couldn't believe he got slapped with an "explicit lyrics" sticker. Well, I guess he had it coming... or did he have one on his previous album? Anyways, I listened to Modest Mouse - realizing that I've already heard it before. Checked out Neko Case. Checked out Eminem (not bad but I wasn't ready to buy it). I also listened to the Shins (funny because I have it on my computer thanks to JJ). I really liked the album art but still couldn't bring myself to buy it. Now The Shins is on Sub-pop and that whole listening station was all Sub-pop stuff... so looking further, I see Death Cab By Cutie so I check that out (very Dashboard Confessional... no wonder those screaming girls like them too) and then I spot The Postal Service comprised of one guy from Death Cab By Cutie and one guy from DNTEL. Anyways, so I listen. First track, pretty good. Second track, it hits me... Chris Eska used it in his short-film Doki-Doki referred to me by Phil. The track is called Such Great Heights. It was covered by Iron and Wine (which Ben had mentioned earlier today) that was on Salah's Brave Girl Replies!!!
You don't get it do you? :)
Well, it's ok... I love marvelling at the connections between things. And this was awesome... one connection to the next to the next... it's almost like solving a mystery (except that there wasn't a mystery to begin with). I got all excited about it but had no one to share it with... so I'm blogging it and so in essence, I'm sharing it with everybody. Ironic isn't it :)
Well, it's late again... what else is new. At least tomorrow is Sunday. Maybe I'll fall asleep to The Postal Service :)
